FAQ: Your Copywriting Queries, Answered
Got a question or two about my copywriting services? I want to ensure the process of working with me is as smooth and stress-free as possible, which is why I've laid out some answers to some commonly-asked freelance copywriting questions. Chances are, I've answered your question below. That said, if you can't find what you're looking for, do not hesitate to get in touch with me - a Yorkshire-based copywriter.
Q. What does a copywriter actually do - and do I need one?
I really don't blame you for asking. Often, people suspect copywriters has something to do with the 'copyright' of things. That’s not the case. 'Copy' simply refers to any text - whether that be on a flyer, a website, or in a press release. Therefore, a freelance copywriter like me is simply someone who writes said copy. You can write copy on* and about pretty much anything…believe me.
Do you need a copywriter, then? It's always worth asking a UK copywriter (if you’re promoting your product or brand in the UK, that is) to look over what you've written - even if just for a fresh pair of eyes.
We know our stuff when it comes to marketing and search engine optimisation (SEO), which means we can help your text work even harder for you, as well as ensure customers like what they see - and read - when they visit your site, or pick up your flyer.
* Writing on a banana skin with a biro (seriously, try it) is the most enjoyable writing you'll do. So blinking smooth.
Q. You aren't local to me; are you still able to complete my project?
Absolutely! While I’m a Yorkshire copywriter, most of my copywriting work is completed remotely, so it doesn't matter where in the world you are! I've completed content for businesses in Europe, Australia, Dubai and the US, which means location really isn't an issue.
The only thing we may have to contend with is the time difference; just ping me an email to tell me more about your project, either way - and let's work out how we might get around it.
Q. How do you usually work?
This is one of my most-asked questions - and the answer is: I'm pretty flexible (although I'm really rubbish at touching my toes!). I tend to work remotely, from my lovely little home office in Huddersfield - and that suits most clients just fine.
That said, some companies I work with request that I work on site, too - and that's no problemo, too. There's no fee for me to travel up to 20 miles to work in your office, but I do request that my expenses are covered should you require me to work on your premises if they’re further afield.
In terms of how the copywriting process goes, it's entirely up to you. We can have an initial phone chat to help me gauge the details I require to help me do my job. Or you may prefer to ping me a short (or long - either's fine!) brief via email - whatever works for you, as I’m well aware that business owners like yourself can be a little time-poor. I will then follow up our chat with a confirmation email before work proceeds.
It's then that you can outline your deadline and flag up any further comments or instructions, as well as details of any additional work you require. Only then will I commence your project. I’ll also ask you to sign a contract, to ensure we both know what’s expected of one another; don’t worry, it isn’t as daunting as it sounds.
Instead, it simply lays out a few things like the timeframe in which you can expect your work to be completed by a Yorkshire copywriter like me, as well as rates, and any amends to the project you may require.
Q. Who have you worked with?
As a freelance copywriter, I've worked with companies big and small; from Boots, the NHS and QVC, to smaller brands and start-ups. Get in touch to discuss your budget and how I might be able to help fulfill your copywriting requirements.
Q. Why should I choose you over another copywriter?
Well, you should really choose the copywriter that complements you and your brand - and there’s no hard feelings from me if you pick someone else.
In a nutshell, though, here’s why we might be a good fit.
Q. I don't have the money in my budget just yet to use a copywriter; what can I do?
Funny you should ask! My copywriting blog is bursting with tips about how you can improve your own copy - why not take a look? I’m also in the process of putting together some mini ebooks, which will soon be available from my site. They include thorough guides on how to write blog content to how to market yourself on social media.
Q. Is it just you - or do you have a team around you?
When you choose to work with me, you’ll liaise with me - and the work will be written and/or edited by me.
I have a very small team, consisting of a junior writer, and a marketing specialist (who helps me come up with - and implement - fresh new ideas for my business.)
I don’t have hefty overheads, as an agency might (and I’d like to think my copywriting prices reflect that) - but since my business is a little bit busier than it was when I set up eight years ago, I now require some help from time to time. Thankfully, the people I work alongside are just great - and I think you’ll like them too.
Q. If I contact you via your website, how soon can I expect a response from you?
You should expect to receive a reply within 24 hours. However, depending on any pressing deadlines I’m working towards, it may take a little while longer. That said, I always do my very best to respond quickly, as I really don’t like leaving people waiting where their copywriting requirements are concerned.
Q. What about payment?
I tend to work on a daily rate (which breaks down to 7.5 hours of pure, unadulterated copywriting time).
I complete projects by the hour, too, with no job too big or too small. I tend to judge each piece of work on its merits, too, which means I may offer a slightly-discounted 'project rate' for larger jobs.
My payment terms are 14 days, with payment to be made by BACS transfer, PayPal, or cheque. For larger projects, I often request 50% payment upfront, which secures my time for the job and gives you assurance that you - and your project - are blocked out in my diary.
Since most of my clients are self-employed, too, they understand the importance of being paid on time - and I'm happy to say my regular clients pay on time, every time. In the instance that late payment has not been agreed in advance, 10% interest (of the full balance) will be added, per month, onto your outstanding invoice.
Q. Do you offer a discount for charities?
I do! I like to keep my prices as competitive as possible, anyway - but if you're looking for a copywriter and you work for a charity, you'll find that my prices are even more tempting - do get in touch for more info.
